Before heading out on your next date, make sure your oral health is up to a loveable standard.
That’s the advice of the British Dental Health Foundation, after research revealed nearly a quarter of the population are concerned about potential bad breath.
With special occasions always looming, the cost of not having good oral health could have implications for you and your love life. Survey data captured by the Foundation showed one in five people avoided smiling due to missing teeth, while more than a third (37 per cent) of people cited stained or yellow teeth as a reason to avoid smiling. More than half of respondents (56 per cent) said the most important physical attribute when it comes to attraction is one’s smile or teeth, fresh breath and clean teeth could make or break the relationship.
Bad breath can be a real passion killer. It is a common problem many people face, and is usually caused by the smelly gases released by bacteria that coat the teeth and tongue. Fortunately, the problem can be easily solved by a simple oral health routine.
Knowing you have fresh breath does wonders for your relationships. The opposite is true for people with bad breath, and being able to hug and kiss your loved ones is a basic human pleasure. You owe it to yourself to put your "Best Kiss" forward.
Our dental practitioners offer some advice on the best way to beat bad breath. “Although some medical problems may be the cause of bad breath (sinusitis, bronchitis, diabetes, gastric reflux, liver or kidney problems) bad breath is most often caused by a lack of good oral hygiene. The most important thing is to regularly have your teeth de-scaled professionally. Most of the smelly bacteria live in and under this hard debris that you cannot remove with a toothbrush at home."
Normal brushing and flossing will remove the soft plaque so your gums are healthy and pink. Bits of plaque and food in between your teeth will rot at body temperature within 12 hours. Drink plenty of water because a good saliva flow is essential to remove dead cells from the gums cheeks and tongue. If you need to freshen your breath up, carry some sugar-free gum, as chewing will stimulate saliva and help prevent your mouth from drying out. If you’re going out on a date, think carefully about what you’re eating and drinking. Most people are offended by bad breath from too much booze, smoking and strong garlic/onions. Smokers can buy nicotine tablets or gum that have no smell. Why not use them when you are on that date or evening out and enjoy fresher breath afterwards. We go above and beyond for our patients.
