How Deep Is You Gum Disease?

Author: Dr. Ved Berani

Periodontal disease is a severe form of gum disease caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the areas surrounding the tooth. When this occurs the body’s natural defence against infection is inflammation. The inflammatory response will cause the gums to bleed and over time, this infection will destroy the bone and soft tissues that surround and support your teeth causing your teeth to move or at worst cause possible loss of the teeth.

In the blood, elevated C- reactive protein (CRP) levels result from the inflammatory process. Researchers have known for quiet some time that elevated CRP levels increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine identified elevated CRP levels as a stronger predictor of heart attacks than elevated cholesterol screening for accurate risk assessment of cardiovascular disease.

As researchers continue to sort out the link between periodontal disease (gum disease) and heart disease, the advice from American Academy of Periodontology, is to not take your gum health for granted as you may have more to lose than just your teeth.
