Oral Care For Kids

Author: Dr. Ved Berani

Here at Healthy Smiles we hope to provide children with a first-rate understanding of why oral health and preventive dentistry is important.

Ideally we would like you to bring your child for a check-up as soon as the baby teeth erupt. Our aim is to start early to familiarise your child with the dental surroundings and educate you about oral growth and your child’s oral hygiene.

You should follow these steps to assist you in caring for your child’s oral health:

  • When the first teeth appear, start cleaning the teeth with a soft wet cloth or gauze pad. Later, use a soft toothbrush with a small head and water only.
  • When your child is one, use a little fluoride toothpaste up until 3 years of age; ensure your child does not swallow toothpaste.
  • At four years, your child should learn to brush unaided.
  • Use disclosing tablets off and on to check if any plaque remains on the teeth after brushing. These tablets will colour plaque that is left on the teeth after brushing.

It is important that you set a consistent routine that becomes common practice in your home. If you need advice or direction, please ask for help.
