Only Floss the Ones You Want to Keep

Flossing is your most important weapon against gum disease and the best way to exterminate plaque next to brushing at home. 

Flossing removes plaque and debris stuck in between your teeth reducing the bacteria in your mouth aiding in eliminating bad breath and helps polish your teeth in between surfaces.

Flossing removes the plaque that you can’t reach with just your tooth brush, if left for a long time this plaque can calcify, turning into tartar. Tartar is hard and near impossible to remove by yourself. Bleeding gums/ gum disease is a result from tartar buildup not being removed by a professional clean at your dentist.

Also, if the bacteria have dietary carbohydrates to feed off in between teeth it may lead to cavities in the future.

While brushing does  a lot of of the job for you its important that you introduce flossing into your routine. We empathize that when you’re new to flossing it may take some time and you may notice a little bleeding, don’t be discouraged, even a few times a week is better than no flossing at all and you will benefit from it. Eventually flossing will feel more natural to you and instead of the original 10 minute job you will be able to thoroughly floss in a matter of minutes using the correct technique.

HOW TO USE FLOSS:

  • Using either waxed floss – which makes it easier to glide between teeth or unwaxed  floss – which squeaks against clean teeth, indicating the plaque has been removed; tear off about a 19 mm length and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Do the same for your other hand using the same finger
  • Wind tight, leaving no slack and gently guide the floss in between your teeth using a gentle zigzagging motion being careful not to just pull down and “snap” the floss into the gums, which can damage the gums.
  • When the floss reaches the gumline, curve it into a “C”-shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel resistance.
  • Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently scrape the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum. Following the contours of the tooth and gums move the floss to the tooth on the other side of the same gap. Repeat the same process
  • Continue this method with all of your teeth not forgetting the backside of your last tooth! And remember only floss the ones you want to keep!
