There are parts of the population that fear needles used in medical and dental procedures. Even those who have no phobia of needles consider dental procedures like tooth extraction, wisdom tooth surgery and tooth canal therapy as near-traumatic because of the injections. Fortunately, gentle dentistry is here to the rescue!

Also known as painless dentistry and sedation dentistry, it involves the use of a class of pharmacological drugs known as sedatives to calm, relax and even put the patient to sleep before and during the dental procedure. Gentle dental care is, indeed, for patients who have generalized fear of dentists, generalized anxiety, and extreme fear of needles. You may even ask for gentle dental care from your dentist just because you have had enough of physical and mental trauma every time you go for your scheduled visits.

How does gentle dentistry work? Basically, your dentist will administer a single or a series of incremental doses of sedatives a day before the procedure or just prior to the procedure in the clinic. The sedative will be administered in various ways – oral, inhalation and even rectal insertion – but you can often choose which one if the most comfortable for your case.

Gentle dental care has several advantages over traditional dental care including but not limited to the following:

  • You are more relaxed, more comfortable and calmer before and during the dental procedure. You need not be worried about the needle puncturing your gums because you are under sedation.
  • You can choose from different levels of sedation depending on your comfort level. In general, mild sedation is for minor dental appointments, moderate sedation is for tooth extraction, and deep sedation is for wisdom tooth extraction. Keep in mind that your dentist will decide which level of sedation is best for your condition.
  • Your dentist will have greater movement control and cooperation. You, on the other hand, will have little to no memory of your treatment, which eases your trauma.

And the best thing about gentle dentistry:

You can have fewer dental appointments because your dentist can perform what needs to be performed in less time.

So, why suffer through your dental appointments when you have gentle dentistry on your side? Ask for it on your next visit.
