Both dental crowns and porcelain veneers are used within the cosmetic dentistry. While they have a lot in common, both create a cosmetic results  that are very close, many people do not understand the difference between them. If you’re considering one of these options, it’s important to learn more about each option.

Here is a closer look at crowns and veneers to help you better understand which option may work best for your needs.

What is the difference between porcelain veneers and dental crowns? The basic difference happens to be the amount of coverage they offer the tooth. In most cases, crowns encase the whole tooth. However, veneers only cover the surface on the front of the tooth. You’ll also find that crowns are quite a bit thicker than veneers are, for a number of reasons.

When dental crowns are applied to a tooth, it becomes the tooth’s new surface. It often helps to give a new shape to the tooth as well as offering a new tooth colour. Most crowns end up being about 2 millimetres thick, or even thicker. However, veneers are usually 1 millimetre thick or thinner. Their thinner design means that there will be less tooth reduction needed and in some cases, you may not need any tooth reduction with a veneer. This makes it a less traumatic procedure, for the patient and the tooth involved.

Benefits and Uses of Crowns

Crowns have some specific benefits and uses. They can be used to drastically change the colour of a tooth. Another use is to significantly change tooth shape. For people that have badly decayed or broken teeth, crowns can help to strengthen and rebuild these teeth. One of the benefits that dental crowns have to offer is durability and strength. For those who need to repair a tooth that gets a lot of biting force or heavy chewing, crowns are an excellent option. However, keep in mind that a tooth that has a crown will always require a crown in the future.

Benefits and Uses of Veneers

Of course, porcelain veneers come with their own benefits and uses as well. Usually veneers work best when offering slight to moderate changes in tooth colour. They are usually applied to teeth that are intact and healthy, although they can help to create some minor changes in tooth shape. One of the main benefits of veneers is the fact that they require much less tooth trimming when compared to crowns, which is a benefit that many people appreciate.
