The recovery time after receiving dental implants is determined by the number of implants you received. However, the time to recover is much shorter than most people believe.

The majority of post-dental implant syndromes will occur during the first week and may include minor bleeding around the implant sites, bruising, swelling, sore tongue and throat, and jaw stiffness.

Bone Grafting

When considering dental implants, the next thing to consider is whether or not bone grafting is required.

Implants function by being attached straight into your jawbone by the surgeon using something that resembles a screw. Consider this screw, also known as a post, to be your new root. Once your gums have healed sufficiently, the surgeon will attach the artificial tooth to the post.

Changing Your Diet

After your dental implant operation, you will need to avoid certain foods and beverages to allow your implant to heal. The following are some of the most important foods and beverages to avoid while recovering:

  • Acidic foods: Tomatoes, lemons, apples, grapes, peanuts, cheese, pasta, rice, pizza
  • Acidic beverages: alcohol, sports drinks, hot chocolate, etc.

Acidic foods and drinks can irritate the tissue surrounding your implant, causing pain and inflammation.

It is also best to avoid consuming anything hard in order to avoid the risk of causing any harm. Soft foods that are recommended for you to eat while you are recovering include

  • Oatmeal
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Baked beans
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Bananas
  • Avocadoes
  • Protein shakes
  • Smoothies
  • Ice cream
  • Soup

You should eat soft foods for at least one week after your procedure, and possibly even longer, depending on your surgeon’s instructions.

Incorporating A Good Oral Hygiene Routine

If you already brush two times a day and floss once a day, this will be no problem. You should continue your oral hygiene routine, but if opening your mouth is difficult or painful right after your treatment, your dentist will recommend rinsing with salt water or an antibacterial mouthwash to avoid infection.

When you can brush and floss your teeth, you should do so, but be gentle during the recovery process.
