What is sleep dentistry?

If dental appointments make you anxious or you often postpone visits out of fear, sleep dentistry could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Sleep dentistry uses general anaesthesia to place you in a deep, sleep-like state during your dental treatment. While you're comfortably asleep, your dentist can carry out the necessary procedures without you feeling a thing.

This approach is ideal for anyone who struggles with pain, discomfort, or fear during dental visits. Because you're fully relaxed and unaware during the treatment, you wake up with the work already done—no stress, no pain, and no bad memories.

At Healthy Smiles, we specialise in sleep dentistry near Diamond Hill, offering a calm and supportive environment for patients who need extra care and reassurance. Our experienced team, in collaboration with qualified anaesthetists, ensures your treatment is not only effective but also completely stress-free. Whether it’s a simple filling or a complex procedure, we’re here to help you receive the dental care you need, comfortably and confidently.

Are people actually opting for sleep dentistry?

Absolutely. Sleep dentistry is becoming increasingly popular in Melbourne, and it’s easy to see why. With up to 8 out of 10 Australians experiencing dental anxiety, many patients are now choosing a more comfortable way to manage their treatments. In fact, over half of our patients opt for sleep dentistry when undergoing complex procedures such as dental implants, root canal therapy, wisdom teeth removal, or periodontal surgery.

By allowing patients to sleep through the procedure, sleep dentistry makes it possible to receive essential dental care without the stress or fear that often comes with it.

Yes, sleep dentistry is a safe and trusted option for patients across Melbourne, especially when performed by experienced professionals in a clinical setting. At Healthy Smiles, your safety and comfort are our top priorities.

Before administering general anaesthesia, a qualified specialist anaesthetist thoroughly reviews your medical history. We also ask about your lifestyle, medications, and any allergies to ensure the procedure is tailored to your individual health profile.

While mild side effects like dizziness, nausea, or chills may occur after anaesthesia, they are temporary and closely monitored by our medical team. To further reduce any risks, a comprehensive medical evaluation is conducted before every sleep dentistry procedure.

Tight Skin Under the Tongue? Sleep Dentistry Can Help

A tight strip of tissue under the tongue, known as a lingual frenulum, can restrict tongue movement and may require surgical correction through a frenectomy or frenuloplasty. In more complex cases, surgical reconstruction may be needed to prevent scarring.

At our sleep dentistry facility near Diamond Hill, we offer gentle, comfortable treatment options under sedation, making procedures like these stress-free for patients with anxiety or discomfort.

If you suspect you have a tight frenulum, book a consultation with our team for a calm, professional assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a treatment take?

Simple treatments last less than an hour, but complex treatments can take up to 6 hours. We can provide you with a ballpark figure after understanding your dental requirements.

Can I choose sleep dentistry for children?
Yes. It can be easier for children to undergo dental treatments while they are sleeping. We will need the consent of parents or legal guardians before we proceed with such procedures.
Will I suffer from any side effects after my sleep dentistry appointment?
The side effects from general anesthesia are usually temporary in nature. You may experience nausea, dizziness, and confusion immediately after the procedure.
Is it okay to have repeated sleep dentistry appointments?
Our sleep dentists advise and use general anesthesia for patients with specific concerns about dentist visits. It is okay to have repeated treatments under sedation, but we avoid overuse.
What are other ways of handling dental anxiety?
Some of the other ways in which we handle dental anxiety are through meditation breathing and gas inhalation, which can calm your nerves.
I don’t have any anxiety problems. Can I still choose sleep dentistry?

If you have a low tolerance to pain or your body is resilient to local anesthesia, then you can still choose sleep dentistry.

Is it easier for dentists to carry out the treatment when the patient chooses sleep dentistry?
Dentists undergo training to work with patients who may have anxiety problems. While they are committed to help you with dental problems even without general anesthesia, a sleeping patient makes it relatively easier for dentists to complete their work faster.
How much does it cost to put you to sleep at the dentist in Melbourne?

Sleep dentistry in Melbourne can cost anywhere between $1200 to $6000. This does not cover the cost of dental treatment.
