What is sleep dentistry?

If dental appointments make you anxious or you often postpone visits out of fear, sleep dentistry could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Sleep dentistry uses general anaesthesia to place you in a deep, sleep-like state during your dental treatment. While you're comfortably asleep, your dentist can carry out the necessary procedures without you feeling a thing.

This approach is ideal for anyone who struggles with pain, discomfort, or fear during dental visits. Because you're fully relaxed and unaware during the treatment, you wake up with the work already done—no stress, no pain, and no bad memories.

At Healthy Smiles, we specialise in sleep dentistry near Diamond Hill, offering a calm and supportive environment for patients who need extra care and reassurance. Our experienced team, in collaboration with qualified anaesthetists, ensures your treatment is not only effective but also completely stress-free. Whether it’s a simple filling or a complex procedure, we’re here to help you receive the dental care you need, comfortably and confidently.

Are people actually opting for sleep dentistry?

Absolutely. Sleep dentistry is becoming increasingly popular in Melbourne, and it’s easy to see why. With up to 8 out of 10 Australians experiencing dental anxiety, many patients are now choosing a more comfortable way to manage their treatments. In fact, over half of our patients opt for sleep dentistry when undergoing complex procedures such as dental implants, root canal therapy, wisdom teeth removal, or periodontal surgery.

By allowing patients to sleep through the procedure, sleep dentistry makes it possible to receive essential dental care without the stress or fear that often comes with it.

General Anaesthesia

General Anaesthesia at Healthy Smiles

General Anaesthesia

For patients who prefer to be completely asleep during treatment, general anaesthesia offers the highest level of comfort. This method is performed in a hospital setting under the care of a qualified anaesthetist. You’ll be fully unconscious, with no memory of the procedure, allowing complex or lengthy dental work to be completed in one visit without stress or discomfort.

IV Sedation

IV Sedation

Also known as “twilight dentistry,” IV sedation is administered directly into your bloodstream for a calm, dream-like state. You’ll remain responsive to instructions but deeply relaxed, with little to no recollection of the treatment. It’s a popular choice for patients with strong dental anxiety or those needing multiple procedures in a single appointment.

IV Sedation

Happy Gas

Happy Gas

Happy gas, or nitrous oxide, is a gentle and fast-acting option for easing dental nerves. Delivered through a small nose mask, it helps you feel light, calm, and comfortable throughout your appointment. Once the gas is turned off, its effects wear off quickly, so you can return to your day without lingering drowsiness.

Anti Anxiety Medication or Sedation via Inhalation

See our process

For those who experience mild to moderate anxiety, sedation via inhalation can help take the edge off. This method involves breathing in a carefully measured sedative through a mask, producing a soothing effect without putting you fully to sleep. It’s ideal for shorter treatments and patients who want to remain awake but at ease.

Oral sedation

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet before your dental appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed. The sedative takes effect gradually, reducing stress and making the experience more comfortable. You’ll remain awake but less aware of the sights, sounds, and sensations of treatment.
