Toothache

A toothache can be difficult to ignore. For some people, it feels like a dull ache that comes and goes. For others, the pain may become stronger and start to interfere with everyday things like eating or sleeping. Even mild discomfort in a tooth can sometimes be a sign that something is not quite right.

Tooth pain does not always start the same way. It may build up slowly over time, or it might appear quite suddenly. Because there can be several possible causes, a dental examination is often needed to understand what is happening.

At Healthy Smiles, patients who come in with tooth pain are examined carefully. The dentist will usually begin by asking about the symptoms, such as when the pain started and what seems to make it worse. The teeth and gums are then checked during a clinical examination. If needed, further diagnostic checks may be suggested to help identify the source of the problem.

Possible Causes of Toothache

Z

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is one of the more common reasons people develop tooth pain. In the early stages, a cavity may not cause any obvious symptoms. As the decay moves deeper into the tooth, sensitivity or discomfort can begin to develop. Some patients notice pain when eating sweet foods or when food becomes trapped in the cavity.

Z

Cracked or Damaged Tooth

A crack in a tooth can sometimes cause pain when biting down or chewing. The discomfort may come and go, which can make it difficult to identify at first. Some people also notice sensitivity when drinking something very cold or hot.

Z

Inflamed or Infected Dental Nerve

Inside each tooth is a soft area that contains nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue becomes irritated or infected, the tooth may become sensitive or painful. This can occur due to deep decay, trauma to the tooth, or other dental problems. The pain may feel sharp at times or may present as a constant ache.

Z

Gum Infection or Inflammation

Not all tooth pain begins in the tooth itself. Sometimes the gums around the tooth are the source of the discomfort. When plaque and bacteria build up along the gumline, the tissue can become inflamed. The gums may feel swollen, tender, or sore when brushing or touching the area.

Z

Wisdom Tooth Concerns

Wisdom teeth can also lead to discomfort, particularly when there is limited space for them to emerge properly. Partially erupted wisdom teeth can trap food and bacteria, which may irritate the surrounding gums and cause pain in that area.
